Skin Deep meets Nubya Garcia

Nubya Garcia is fire. You may have seen her playing sold out gigs across the UK (and the rest of the world – she is just about to tour Australia, and of course most tickets have already sold out). Or heard her playing on Brownswood’s recent project, We Out Here, celebrating London’s young jazz scene, alongside Ezra Collective, Moses Boyd, Theon Cross, Shabaka Hutchings, Triforce, Joe Armon-Jones, and Kokoroko.

Nubya is a bandleader and composer, but most importantly she is a collaborator. Her compositions glow with African and Caribbean rhythms, soul, jazz, hip-hop and r&b. We sat down with her to chat about the ‘hype’ building around her and the London jazz scene at the moment, about how her music fits into a long, rich history of music and sound, and how she is working to create something that will last far into the future.

Thank you to the glorious people at Lomond Rooms for allowing us to shoot in the space. And to Anna de Guia-Eriksson and Femi Anderson for their magic behind the camera.
